FAQ

Having a bit of trouble with your Tape Echo? Here are  some of the common questions we are asked.

1. My echo sounds distorted. I have cleaned the heads and the rails, but the echo still sounds distorted.

You need to demagnetize your unit.

2. There is a hum when selecting the different heads.

This points towards one of the heads being faulty. Find out if it is 1, 2 or 3 by selecting each head and listening for the hum, for only the first 3 settings. (The remainder of the settings use multiple heads) That’s the head you need to replace. If heads 1, 2 or 3 are faulty, it affects 4, 5 and 6.

3. My tape loop seems to stick on entry or exit to the tape tank.

You need to do the following to fix this:

  • Demagnetise your unit – pay attention to the capstan wheel
  • Clean the guide rails
  • Check the capstan wheel (this needs to be clean – with no tape residue) and make sure the wheel is not misshapen (which happens from use over time). If it is, it needs to be replaced.

4. The echo signal is weak coming out of the unit.

Replace the tape loop. Demagetise and clean thoroughly all parts in the tape track.

5. The echo sound wobbles.

This means that your motor is slowing down and then speeding up. This happens if the capstan wheel is worn and needs to be replaced, or the bearings are seizing in the motor - which means the motor needs reconditioning.
